Wash apples, cut in half lengthwise, remove core and slice vertically. Place at the bottom of a casserole dish. Half-cover with a portion of the nuts and then cover with slices of brie cheese (approx. ½ inch thick). Add rest of mixed nuts on top and cover with maple syrup. Cook on broil for 5 minutes.
Enjoy with crackers or bread!
If using bread machine: Place all the ingredients except pecans in the pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Set the chosen program. Add pecans when machine beeps. Cool on rack when completed.
If using bread machine to mix, but baking in oven: Put all ingredients except pecans in the bowl of your bread machine, program and select dough option. When the kneading and first rise is complete, flip the dough on your work area, and work in pecans. Put dough on baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let rise a second time, until doubles in volume.
Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (205°C) for 30-40 minutes. Cool on rack.
Melt the butter and combine with maple syrup, salt and cayenne pepper in a pan over a low heat. Add the pecans and stir to mix all the ingredients. Leave the mixture on the heat for 2-3 minutes. Spread the spicy pecan mixture on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil to cool.
Arrange pecans in bowls to serve.
